We flew from Bali to Singapore, which I constantly spell Signapore. We landed and received a text from Rob with his address and hopped in a taxi, nice taxi driver, good first impressions, especially after Bali’s first impressions! Arrived at Robs and were so happy to be welcomed into his home, (lovely home!) Rob spent the night annotating our huge tourists map of Singapore with notes of where to eat, where to go, what to see and what to eat! Accompanied by gin and tonic! Also got fed, which was amazing, ahhh it was a very good start to singapore!!
Next day we woke up – and didn’t have to check out!! Put some washing in (don’t underestimate just how exciting that was!) And had a seriously good powerful shower! Made good use of the free internet (hence all the Chaing Mai pictures online!) and headed out, a little later than planned due to the novelty of a home and free internet!! We had our assault on Singapore planned down to a tee. First was Orchard road, absolutely surreal amount of shopping centres, all bigger than westfield white city, it was crazy crazy!!! This road was kitted out for Christmas!!! Singapore is fantastically clean, everyone very nice, and very international.Tried to get me a phone only to find out there was no such thing as a really cheap phone so will leave that till another country! It then POURED, rainy season, bought an umbrella and continued! Rain didn’t last long though and soon we were in the Colonial distract walking past every sight marked on the map and clicking at the correct points! Was really interesting, the huge cricket field, surrounded by the parliament buildings, a post office and a church (beautiful white one!!) Next en route was little india which was indeed that!! The few streets were just like stepping into india, the most impressive little india yet (there seems to be one in every city!) We ate where Rob recommended, it was canteen style but the food was excellent, the coriander chicken in particular! Then went back to Robs, freshened up and was off to meet Lars, Clare’s uni friend who works in Singapore now. That was great, yet slightly surreal seeing him not in Nottingham! But great. Then went off to meet Rob who was with work friends and spent the rest of the night chatting and drinking and chatting and drinking…. Later on…. A lot later on….. Rob took us to a hawker centre and ordered the best fish dishes on the menu to try, the best being the chilli stingray which went down very well! This was accompanied by crab (which we saw before its life was suddenly cut short!) and rice, and carrot cake which was a mixture of rice and fish. No carrot. No cake. Great end to a great night.
Next day we still didn’t have to check out!!! Had a great lie in! And headed out for some food and had…. tepinyaki?! Definitely spelt wrong but it was yum and had peppered steak, noodles, a yum green veg all cooked infront of us in one of the malls…. Got a guided tour of the most impressive shops and centres, ending up in a mac store… Thats a whole separate story!! Lets just say my international student card got well used!! And made it back to Robs just intime to catch a taxi to the airport…. We had a great time in Singapore and would of loved more time, had no idea how much there was to do and is definitely somewhere we will try to go back to via somewhere another day.
