We got to Salta at 7am off the bus, and arrived at our nice little hostel where we got given breakfast and our bed made super fast (maybe we look really rough after getting off these long bus rides…) We had a day of planning, washing and deciding to rent a car again to get out of the city and see the small towns not too far away.
We picked up our car off a seriously helpful woman who spoke english making renting a car seem unbelievably easy! Nice new shiny car, power steering, electric windows and everything!!
We got out of the city, it was even more mental than San Juan! And set out winding our way up a huge mouton that is said to have amazing views…. We say it was said to have amazing views because most of the time we were driving through cloud with only about 2/3metres visibility!! When we finally made it out the other side there were just blue clouds and millions of cactus plants!!
We arrived at Cachi, a beautiful little town, that we described as an Argentinian Paraty! We found a nice place to stay, had a nice dinner and a really nice wander around town and little arty shops.
We then had a long drive down an unpaved section of Route 40 to Cafayate, past some really tiny little adobe towns, passing great scenes along the way like a young guy cycling his bike down the road with a shotgun on his back! It was amazing scenery all they way. Cafayate itself was a large town, really nice but lacked the quaint beauty that you get from the little ones! After a night in Cafayate we drove the car back and got ourselves our last amazing steak dinner!
The next day we crossed the boarder into Chile leaving Argentina behind, amazing journey and a sad goodbye! But were really happily we had time to see it so well and with a tub of dulche de leche in tow!
